Remembering Exxon Valdez

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the Exxon Valdez oil spill. Immortalized as the largest oil spill in United States waters, the Exxon Valdez spill is a reminder as to the unpredictable nature and devastating impacts oil spills can have on the environment.

For the OWCN, this is a day for us to reflect on the dangers oil spills pose to California’s shores and wildlife, as well as to consider how fortunate we Californians are to have a comprehensive oil spill program.

The OWCN has changed its homepage to commemorate the Exxon Valdez anniversary. We have also included a section that reviews the impacts that occurred from the Exxon Valdez oil spill, including how it helped initiate California’s efforts to prepare for spills.
