OWCN Volunteers and Staff of the Refugio Incident

For the past few weeks we’ve talked a lot about the Refugio Incident and the oiled animals coming in.  Tonight I thought I’d focus on one of the more positive things to come out of this spill – the hard working folks at the wildlife centers.

Here at the Los Angeles Oiled Bird Care and Education Center we have been very lucky to have an all star team of staff made up of a motley crew from around the state.  The OWCN staff here are representing International Bird Rescue, Bird Ally X, SeaWorld, the Monterey SPCA, The Marine Mammal Center, and Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center. And then there are my volunteers.  I LOVE, absolutely love, OWCN volunteers.  Never has there been a group so ready to do hard, dirty work and long hours with very little thanks – especially from the birds.  Turns out pelicans aren’t very good an expressing gratitude…

The volunteers have flooded in from all over as well.  Besides getting volunteer help from all the Organizations listed above, we’ve also received a great team of volunteers from the Monterey Bay Aquarium that rushed in to help fill some shifts we needed covered.  I really cannot express the gratitude we have for our team of pre-trained volunteers.  The top notch effort everyone is putting out really shows that we have the greatest Network out there! -Becky
