“Mystery Goo” A Mystery No More

Earlier this month, agencies reported that the cause of the “mystery goo” event that occurred in the San Francisco Bay area in January 2015 had been found. Labs identified the compound as a “…mixture of oils that contained polymers, or molecules, that gave the goo a hard, gummy consistency….made up of fatty acids and triglycerides most likely derived from plants.”

While the substance itself that killed more than 300 birds and required a concerted effort to capture and rehabilitate more than 300 additional live animals has been found, the source of the compound remains a mystery.
