Job – Wildlife Field Operations Coordinator

WILDLIFE FIELD OPERATIONS COORDINATOR  – Under the general direction of the OWCN Director, coordinate wildlife capture and transportation activities for the Wildlife Health Center’s Oiled Wildlife Care Network (OWCN). As a key manager for the OWCN’s spill response team, lead wildlife field operations during oil spill response. During non-spill periods, ensure oil spill readiness by leading wildlife recovery training/informational workshops for staff and volunteers throughout California, engage in research activities to ensure ‘best achievable collection and care’ of oiled wildlife, help oversee the use of staff and volunteers in the field, supervise the acquisition and management of supplies necessary for field operations. Assist with teaching and public service activities.

As many of you know, Yvette Hernandez, who has been invaluable here at the OWCN is moving to Wisconsin.  We hate to see her leave us and now must try to find a replacement.

The Wildlife Health Center is currently recruiting for a Wildlife Field Operations Specialist.  Under the direction of the Wildlife Field Operations Supervisor this position will provide specialized support in the area of oiled wildlife capture and transportation for the Wildlife Health Center’s Oiled Wildlife Care Network (OWCN).  As a member of the OWCN’s spill response team, the specialist will support wildlife field operations during oil spill response, assisting in the capture, stabilization, and transportation of affected wildlife. During non-spill periods, they will help ensure oil spill readiness by helping to organize and lead wildlife recovery training/informational workshops for staff and volunteers throughout California, maintaining equipment and supplies necessary for field operations, assisting in research activities to ensure ’best achievable collection and care’ of oiled wildlife, and helping oversee the use of volunteers in the field for recovery, stabilization, and transportation activities.

Specific Responsibilities:

• Provide essential support of oiled wildlife field operations (recovery and transportation of oiled wildlife to stabilization and/or primary care facilities) during oil spill response, under the guidance of OWCN’s Wildlife Field Operations Supervisor (10%).
• During non-spill periods, under the guidance of OWCN’s Recovery and Transportation Supervisor participate in developing and exercising the OWCN’s recovery and transportation capacity and readiness (40%).
• Help develop outreach materials on oil spill /disaster preparedness, emergency response management, and wildlife field techniques (40%).
• Assist in collaborative and independent research that informs best achievable oiled wildlife response in California (10%).

Requirements:

• B.S. degree in the biological sciences (ecology, wildlife biology, etc.) and/or equivalent training
• Experience working with wildlife, including capture and restraint of wild animals
• Experience working in a wildlife or veterinary research environment
• Strong written and verbal communication skills to produce training/outreach materials, conduct workshops, and make public and research presentations.
• Computer knowledge and skills to utilize various programs and software for word processing, spreadsheets, website applications and presentations.
